The Position:

Reporting to the Public Works Manager of Operations, the Project Technologist provides Civil Engineering technical support in Public Works maintenance and Capital projects that includes survey and design, gravel pit development, road and bridge maintenance and upgrade programs, drainage projects, GIS development, road infrastructure asset management, inspections, project and work plan development, and other duties as required.

The County is responsible for all maintenance and construction along the County roadways, subdivisions, hamlets, and bridge structures. The County maintains approximately 2,028 km of gravel roads and 120 km of paved/oiled roads.

This position is based out of the Wetaskiwin Shop. Regular hours of work are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (8 hour workday) Monday to Friday; and must be available for overtime as required.

Desired Education and Experience:

  • §  Post Secondary Education: a Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology.
  • §  Must possess or be eligible for certification as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), or (P.Tech) under the Association of Science and Engineering Technology (ASET) in the Province of Alberta; or as a P.L. (Eng.) under APEGA.
  • §  Five (5) Years of relatable work experience is preferred but not required.
  • §  Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

Skills and Abilities:

  • §  Design and Drafting skills with the use of AutoCAD and Civil3D software applications.
  • §  Survey, design, construction layout, and project management for various public works projects.
  • §  Strong survey skills are required using various instruments such as spirit level, transit, total station, laser level, GPS RTK systems, and aerial drones.
  • §  Proficient in the use of computer hardware (mobile and stationary devices) and the use of various software programs such as Auto CAD, Civil 3D, GIS Mapping, Outlook, Word, Excel, and County specific project costing and Work Order systems.
  • §  Must possess strong analytical capabilities such as critical thinking and reasoning, and qualitative and quantitative analytics.
  • §  Demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • §  Demonstrate strong moral character, duty and ethics in all aspects of daily work activities.
  • §  Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • §  Understand roles and responsibilities in a municipal Health and Safety Program.
  • §  Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, County departments and third-party contacts.
  • §  Understand current standards, methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in gravelled road and paved road construction.
  • §  Conduct site inspections, assess situations, and develop Work Order cost estimates for implementation into the annual road and bridge maintenance and upgrade programs.
  • §  Able to prepare and present applicable reports and records.
  • §  Maintain an understanding of all applicable legislation as it relates to municipal work.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • ·       Frequent exposure to seasonal and environmental conditions during surveys, inspections and field work.
  • ·       Considerable time will be dedicated to office work.
  • ·       Driving of a ½ ton truck to work sites, occasional lifting, use of hand tools and survey instruments, periods of standing, extensive walking, and climbing on un-even surfaces.

Salary Range:  $80,261-102,412
