Lead Hand – Public Works

The Town of Nanton is currently seeking a full time, self-motivated individual to join the Operations team. This is a working position as well as a supervisory one. The Lead Hand performs a wide array of duties in the Operations Departmentunder the guidance of the Operations ManagerThey will provide knowledge, experience, and leadership while assistingin direction and work planning for operations.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Water, Sewer and Storm Water

• Assist in the installation, repair and maintenance ofwater, sewer and storm water lines and systems
• Mow, trim and otherwise maintain grass, turf, and weed control in storm water management areas

Roads

• Repair and maintain roads, alleys, curbs, sidewalks
• Install, maintain and/or remove public signage
• Snow removal, including the sanding of streets,roads, sidewalks, and pathways
• Sweep and or clean streets, roads, sidewalks, and pathways, including weed control
• Line painting
• Remove garbage/empty garbage and recycling receptacles

Cemetery

• Landscaping and maintenance 
• Grave digging services as required as well as internments of cremations  

General/Other

• Monitor and direct the progress and completion of work
• May be required to perform shift work, includingearly mornings, nights, weekends, and statutoryholidays
• Participate and provide leadership in the health and safety program, including toolbox meetings, worksite and hazard inspections, and other duties as required
• Provide instruction as required in the operation and service of a variety of equipment, including trimmers, lawn mowers, and skid steers and other heavy equipment such as loader hoes and grader.
• Foster and promote through a positive attitude andexample, safety and work     ethics.
• Assume assigned duties and responsibilities of the Operations Manager in     their absence.

The candidate will possess the following skills and qualifications:

• Minimum grade 12 high school education orequivalency
• First Aid, CPR, AED & WHIMS certification (orability to obtain)
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and similarprograms
• Must be cleared by a Canadian Police InformationCentre (CPIC) security check
• Three years’ experience in a Public Works municipalsetting or equivalent private sector experience with equipment, water, stormwater, and wastewater utility systems
• Basic equipment maintenance and repair
• A good mechanical ability
• Good public relation skills
• Must demonstrate ability to be organized, managetime, and work well with staff

Special consideration given to candidates with the following:

• Water Distribution Systems Level 2
• Wastewater Collection Systems Level 2
• AMHSA Safety Certification in Hazard Identification,Inspections, and Investigations
• Certification in Pesticide/ Herbicide Application

This position is recognized under the agreement between the Town of Nanton and CUPE Local 37. Rate of pay effective Jan. 1, 2022 - $30.54/hour.
