PWS Level I introduces the student to public works to leadership, supervision, public works operations safety, asset management and an introduction to finance.Topics covered include leadership skills, personal development, integrity and ethics, motivation and morale, organizational behavior and culture, change management, conflict resolution, general overview of the many functions that make up Public Works, safety and an introduction to financial management including budgeting 101 and price costing. The course is delivered through a series of lectures, in-class exercises, and discussions.
PWS Level II introduces the student to the broad concepts of community relations, verbal and written communications, and the mechanics of city hall, along with the relationship between staff and elected officials.Topics covered include presentation and verbal skills, government and community, legislation and authority, governance meeting mechanics, bylaws and policies, interaction with council, written reports to council, dealing with the media, customer service, labour relations, the hiring process and documentation, accounting and cost control, and the purchase and inventory management process for finance. The course is delivered through a series of lectures, in-class exercises, and discussions.
PWS Level III introduces the student to the further management skills, resource management, contract law & legislation, creating the future and Municipal Finance.Topics covered include delegation, organizational design, creating work plans, contract regulations, administering contracts and legislation, strategic planning, basic project management and leadership skills, creating the future, business planning, budgeting financial reporting.
